Many people attempt to lose weight on their own and fail because it is a tough task which is were your support network helps.

For anyone the decision to lose weight or get healthier is going to be entirely up to you the way you go about this will also be up to you but there are some simple rules of thumb. You have to want to do it and you have to have fun, if this challenge gets tedious and boring, you will quit.

It is also important to set goals that are not too high, if you are realistic it will be much easier to stay motivated. If however you set your goals too high, you may not reach them because you can't see the progress you desire. It is too easy to give up when this happens so you must set your goals realistically.

How you will change your eating habit is possibly the hardest part of losing weight. This is because we condition ourselves to eat certain things and depending on how long you have been overweight will determine how hard it will be for this part of your programme to be come effective. Many are addicted to things like caffeine and sugar while they are becoming overweight and serious will power is needed to combat those addictions but there are basic guidelines to help you.

Fats, oils and sweets should be used sparingly, if at all and whilst your body needs some fats, these should be consumed sparingly. The USDA pyramid has been designed to set up the normal range of eating habits in the healthiest way possible and is a good guide to follow. Some of the suggestions within the pyramid are 2 to 3 servings of dairy, 2 to 3 servings of meat, 3 to 5 servings of vegetables and 2-3 servings of fruits. A healthy diet calls for 6-11 servings of grains or bread. All these servings are to be spread out through out the day of course and you must watch your portion size.

Exercise is one of the most important parts of a diet plan and is the one step most people leave out completely. The AMA suggests that 30 minutes a day is healthy for most adults and you don't have to work out like there is no tomorrow.
