What is Intrinsa

Female sexual dysfunction often referred to as frigidity describes a woman’s lack of desire to have sexual activity. Women who experience female sexual dysfunction have little or no response to sexual stimulation and these women also appear to have an inability to achieve orgasm. Medical professionals have concentrated on answers to male erectile dysfunction, however in recent the focus has changed and Intrinsa has been developed.

It is hoped that Intrinsa will do for female dysfunction what Viagra did for male dysfunction with Intrinsa being due to be released in the summer of 2006. The medication takes the form of a testosterone patch for a woman to wear on her abdomen. Intrinsa releases a low dose of hormones that increase the sexual drive the content of the patch is time released over a period increasing the sex drive but doing so slowly, Intrinsa is a testosterone patch. Experts tell us testosterone is produced naturally in a woman's ovaries and adrenal glands and has long been linked to female sexual function and the loss of sexual desire in women can be associated with a testosterone drop. This low desire is the most commonly reported female sexual dysfunction.

Sexual dysfunction in women falls into different categories, the first of which is lack of desire. This is defined when a woman has no interest in sex at all. Second there are issues of arousal, which means that a woman is having difficulty becoming aroused.  The final two categories are not being to achieve organism, and sexual pain disorders such as dyspareunia and vaginismus, when a woman has pain during sex.

It is believed that sexual dysfunction is encountered more often in women than in men. Surprisingly, medicine has been around for years to address male sexual dysfunction but now companies are developing pills, creams, gels and sprays for female sexual dysfunctions. Intrinsa is on trial by the Food and Drug Administration with the hope it can be soon approved for public use.
