Women and Viagra

You may be surprised but Pfizer the manufacturer of Viagra tell us that the medication has been prescribed for some 150,000 women and it seems to work for those who are experiencing sexual dysfunction.

Recently it has been discovered that Viagra works for men and women, the medication increases blood flow to the genitals which apparently works in both sexes. The increased blood flow causes the penis to become hard and erect in men however in women the increased blood flow to the genital area also works for them. The arteries that feed the spongy tissue in the penis and clitoris dilate when they receive signals from the brain which is carried by nitric oxide in the blood. This activates the enzyme which makes a molecule known as cGMP (cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate) which allows the smooth muscle in the artery wall to relax and the blood vessel dilates.  To achieve sexual arousal women need this blood flow, just as men.

There has not been a Viagra study with women but official reports tell us, that the drug is working for women and that it helps with lubrication and more arousal as well as less problems with orgasm.

It is thought that the side effects for women will probably be the same as they are in men and Viagra can be just as serious for women if they take it with heart medicine containing nitrates.

The physical problem of sexual dysfunction is treated by Viagra by increasing blood flow to the genital area and comes in three different doses, 25mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. If you are undergoing medical treatment for some other illness or ongoing health issue such as diabetes Viagra may not be right for you.  You should always check with your doctor to see if this medicine is the right treatment for you. Your doctor can determine what if any health issues or drug reactions to beware of and when you talk to your doctor about Viagra it is important to be up front and honest about any medical issues you may have or suspect you have. Interactions between drugs can affect the way the drug reacts to your system and pre-existing health problems may put you at risk.

Viagra for women has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration but doctors can prescribe it for both sexes, but there is a product called Intrinsa which is meant to work in a similar way to Viagra.
